Even on the softer setting I can't use it without splashing everywhere and gum pain.

Simply open your mouth just a little bit and keep your face down so that water drains out between your lips. And keep the flosser very close to your gum to the point where it’s touching your teeth and gum then press start. Select Gentle mode for the first several times, if you still have gum pain with the softer setting, you should go see a dentist.
